Esporte Clube Bahia's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Luís Fernando Gaspar recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 6th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Hílton Garcia during the 21st minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In the 21st match minute, Esporte Clube Bahia was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Hílton Garcia to maneuver through the defense. The supporters of Urawa Reds FC booed when Esporte Clube Bahia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 23 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hílton Garcia didn't get a good kick on the ball. After having played for 24 minutes, Luís Fernando Gaspar managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Urawa Reds FC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Luís Fernando Gaspar was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Hílton Garcia fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 27th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Enio de Sena having to interfere. 30 minutes into the match, Urawa Reds FC's goalkeeper Enio de Sena had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Hílton Garcia. Urawa Reds FC's defense didn't have a chance, in the 30th minute, when Hílton Garcia scored to the left of an out of position Enio de Sena, making the score, 2-0. Luís Fernando Gaspar fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 41st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Diamantino Meirelles having to interfere. After 46 played minutes, Urawa Reds FC's Diguinho Capixaba shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Diamantino Meirelles came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Urawa Reds FC reached it. Diamantino Meirelles showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Luís Fernando Gaspar in the 46th minute of the match. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Luís Fernando Gaspar was the one to do the kick off. Enio de Sena made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Hílton Garcia in the 52nd minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Virgílio do Nascimento in the 56th minute of play forced Urawa Reds FC's goalkeeper Enio de Sena to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The crowd rose to their feet as Urawa Reds FC's Luís Fernando Gaspar slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Diamantino Meirelles. That made the score 2-1 after 57 minutes of play. In the 62nd minute, Luís Fernando Gaspar fired away a shot on goal. He put a little to much spin on the ball and sent it just wide of the right post. 67 minutes into the match, Luís Fernando Gaspar had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Diamantino Meirelles. Esporte Clube Bahia's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Luís Fernando Gaspar was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-2. 75 minutes into the match, Attila Berkes notched a goal, 2-3, to the right of Esporte Clube Bahia's Diamantino Meirelles. Diamantino Meirelles was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. In the 79th minute the ball was on its way in behind Urawa Reds FC's goalkeeper Enio de Sena, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Esporte Clube Bahia's Diamantino Meirelles played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Luís Fernando Gaspar in the 84th minute of play. After 85 played minutes Esporte Clube Bahia got a freekick which was hit by Luiz Guilherme dos Santos. In the 88th minute, Luís Fernando Gaspar got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal.
