The audience was convinced that Gilson Meira's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Adolfo Negri was relentless in the 20th minute of the game. After having played for 92 minutes, Dorival Araújo managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. An unexpected shot in the 95th minute by Gilson Meira got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. Itaiu's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
