In the 2nd match minute, Mataruca was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by André Gonçalves to maneuver through the defense. Narciso Fontes fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 4th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Romário Torres having to interfere. In the 6th minute, Frederico Vale hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Narciso Fontes in the 21st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Romário Torres saved Mataruca from getting behind. In the 24th minute Narciso Fontes shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Romário Torres saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Romário Torres took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Narciso Fontes, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Cristian do Vale received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 32nd minute. Osmar Quintal tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In a very dangerous position, a player in Gremio fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 34th minute. Penalty! The referee gave Mataruca a penalty, 36 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Pedrinho Miranda, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Gremio's Osmar Quintal. 0-1. 42 minutes into the match, Daniel Capixaba notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of Mataruca's Romário Torres. Romário Torres was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Gremio's Frederico Vale got his second yellow card of the match in the 45th minute. The referee ordered Frederico Vale off the ground. Frederico Vale kicked well hit freekick during the 46th minute of the match. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Cristian do Vale to strike the kick off in the second half. A very good chance. 66 minutes into the match, Mataruca's goal looked a bit too open when Daniel Capixaba came free, but Romário Torres reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Cristian do Vale could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 67th minute of the match, but Osmar Quintal made a huge save. After 68 played minutes Gremio got a freekick which was hit by Narciso Fontes. Cristian do Vale struck a weak shot in the 69th minute. Osmar Quintal didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Mataruca. After having played for 71 minutes, Tião das Neves managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Mataruca's supporters crossed their fingers, but Tião das Neves was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Cristian do Vale's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Osmar Quintal read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 72nd minute of play. In the 78th minute of the game, Narciso Fontes landed unfortunately after trying to head the ball, and pulled a muscle in the back, so badly that he had to leave the field. After 78 minutes, Tião das Neves mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Mataruca and the Gremio players grew even worse after the yellow card. A collision led to Mataruca getting a freekick after 79 minutes play. Tião das Neves hit a great ball. The supporters of Mataruca booed when Gremio was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 80 match minutes in a wonderful position. César Amaral didn't get a good kick on the ball. With a little luck, Gremio's Osmar Quintal got control of the ball when Cristian do Vale tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 88th match minute, Gremio was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Renatinho Britto to maneuver through the defense. After a defensive mix-up in Gremio's zone, Cristian do Vale stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Osmar Quintal came out of the goal and Cristian do Vale tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Despite being the better team, Mataruca failed to find the winning goal and were forced to settle for a single point.
