Jacinto Moreno fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 8th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Manfredo Coelho having to interfere. 13 minutes into the match, Sergio's Fabiano Marquez broke free and took a long shot that unfortunately flew wide. A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. Henrique Araújo received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 14th minute. Ademir Varela tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When Henrique Araújo came up free with the goalie in the 16th minute, the Sergio fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Henrique Araújo couldn't finish the play. In the 22nd match minute, Sergio was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Gildo Vianna to maneuver through the defense. If Cacá Martins had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 28th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Ademir Varela showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Henrique Araújo, who was totally free with the ball in the 33rd minute. Umberto Meireles sent away a hard shot on goal in the 36th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After 39 played minutes Itaipu SC got a freekick which was hit by João Carlos Esteves. Henrique Araújo received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 41st minute. Ademir Varela tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Dagoberto Félix struck a weak shot in the 46th minute. Manfredo Coelho didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Itaipu SC. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Henrique Araújo stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Cacá Martins might have been able to make a better finish in the 54th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Manfredo Coelho. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Cacá Martins ran back to his position shaking his head. Itaipu SC's Dagoberto Félix got a good chance for a goal in the 60th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Sergio's Manfredo Coelho played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cacá Martins in the 62nd minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Dagoberto Félix got free with Manfredo Coelho in the 64th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Dagoberto Félix scored 0-1 in the 65th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Manfredo Coelho, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Henrique Araújo fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 81st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ademir Varela having to interfere. After a defensive mix-up in Itaipu SC's zone, Umberto Meireles stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Ademir Varela came out of the goal and Umberto Meireles tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Itaipu SC's supporters were very happy and cheered loudly because their team had won after a very close match.
