After 5 played minutes Newcastle-under-Lyme got a freekick which was hit by Liam Croyden. Marty Tucker received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 8th minute. Louis Tully tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 9 minutes into the match, Newcastle-under-Lyme's goal looked a bit too open when Billy Seward came free, but Louis Tully reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The supporters of High Hesket City booed when Newcastle-under-Lyme was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 10 match minutes in a wonderful position. Liam Croyden didn't get a good kick on the ball. Ricky McGrath kicked well hit freekick during the 12th minute of the match. 13 minutes into the match, High Hesket City's Syd Peake broke free and took a long shot that unfortunately flew wide. A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. In the 15th minute Marty Tucker shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Louis Tully saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Billy Seward recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 20th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Ben Vaughan made an important save on a dangerous shot by Dave Argent in the 23rd minute. Billy Seward took the ball and in the 26 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Louis Tully. Louis Tully dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. After 29 minutes, Robin Hodges mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Newcastle-under-Lyme and the High Hesket City players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 30th match minute, Newcastle-under-Lyme was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Robin Hodges to maneuver through the defense. Dave Argent took the ball and in the 34 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Ben Vaughan. Ben Vaughan dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1. The audience thought a goal was coming when Dave Argent got free with Ben Vaughan in the 38th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Dave Argent came free with the goalkeeper in the 41st minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Ben Vaughan could save by the left post. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Brian Carter in the 43rd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Ben Vaughan prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Duncan Moody hit a great freekick 43 minutes into the match. 45 minutes into the game, one of High Hesket City:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. When the match had been going on for 47 minutes, Newcastle-under-Lyme's Ricky McGrath got an opportunity to shoot a penalty. He stayed cool and waited for the goalkeeper to move, before he confidently shot the ball into the goal, to the left of Ben Vaughan. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-1.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Brian Carter was the one to do the kick off. After a rather tough play, Newcastle-under-Lyme's Liam Croyden got a free kick in the 52nd minute. Marty Tucker received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 57th minute. Louis Tully tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When Liam Croyden was, once again, overly rough in his play he received his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. 58 minutes had been played. A collision led to Newcastle-under-Lyme getting a freekick after 59 minutes play. Liam Croyden hit a great ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Billy Seward got free with Louis Tully in the 62nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 67th minute, Billy Seward got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. If Billy Seward had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 68th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Billy Seward sent away a hard shot on goal in the 71st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After having played for 75 minutes, Brian Carter managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Newcastle-under-Lyme's supporters crossed their fingers, but Brian Carter was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Newcastle-under-Lyme's Louis Tully played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Marty Tucker in the 88th minute of play. Dave Argent fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 89th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ben Vaughan having to interfere. Billy Seward sent away a hard shot on goal in the 91st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 94th minute, Marty Tucker got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Billy Seward fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 98th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Louis Tully having to interfere.
