The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Arnberg Edgarsson in the 5th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Geirfinnur Kristjánsson saved Bender Garði from getting behind. The crowd rose to their feet as Retis Akureyri's Falgeir Guðbjörnsson slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Geirfinnur Kristjánsson. That made the score 1-0 after 9 minutes of play. 13 minutes into the match, Retis Akureyri's goal looked a bit too open when Finnbjörn Pálmarsson came free, but Hreiðar Guðbjörnsson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Bender Garði's zone, Arnberg Edgarsson stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Geirfinnur Kristjánsson came out of the goal and Arnberg Edgarsson tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 20 minutes into the match, Falgeir Guðbjörnsson notched a goal, 2-0, to the right of Bender Garði's Geirfinnur Kristjánsson. Geirfinnur Kristjánsson was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. When Óttar Svavarsson fell near the penalty area in the 23rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Bender Garði's protests and gave Óttar Svavarsson a yellow card for diving instead. After 23 played minutes Bender Garði got a freekick which was hit by Óttar Svavarsson. Arnberg Edgarsson struck a weak shot in the 29th minute. Geirfinnur Kristjánsson didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Retis Akureyri. In the 30th minute, Finnbjörn Pálmarsson hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Arnberg Edgarsson in the 31st minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Geirfinnur Kristjánsson prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Hreiðar Guðbjörnsson showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sigurlaugur Fjalarsson, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. 39 minutes into the game, Sigurlaugur Fjalarsson cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 2-2. Hreiðar Guðbjörnsson was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Sigurlaugur Fjalarsson fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 43rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Hreiðar Guðbjörnsson having to interfere.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Sigurlaugur Fjalarsson was the one to do the kick off. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Sigurmar Indriðason during the 52nd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After a rather tough play, Retis Akureyri's Sigurmar Indriðason got a free kick in the 53rd minute. Retis Akureyri's Hreiðar Guðbjörnsson played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Sigurlaugur Fjalarsson in the 58th minute of play. Geirfinnur Kristjánsson made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Falgeir Guðbjörnsson in the 62nd minute of play. With his leg Hreiðar Guðbjörnsson managed to avoid a goal in the 63rdth minute, when Bender Garði's Þjóðvarður Þengilsson fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. If Þjóðvarður Þengilsson had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 65th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Bender Garði's Sigurlaugur Fjalarsson got a good chance for a goal in the 67th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Finnbjörn Pálmarsson kicked well hit freekick during the 68th minute of the match. Sigurlaugur Fjalarsson could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 70th minute of the match, but Hreiðar Guðbjörnsson made a huge save. Falgeir Guðbjörnsson sent away a hard shot on goal in the 73rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 75th minute, Bender Garði's Goði Hreinsson seemed to kick out at an opponent. The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Goði Hreinsson the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of Bender Garði protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Goði Hreinsson had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. In a very dangerous position, a player in Bender Garði fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 75th minute. Penalty! The referee gave Retis Akureyri a penalty, 77 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Baldur Gretarsson, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Bender Garði's Geirfinnur Kristjánsson. 3-2. Þjóðvarður Þengilsson sent away a hard shot on goal in the 82nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Bender Garði's Þjóðvarður Þengilsson got a good chance for a goal in the 84th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After having played for 93 minutes, Falgeir Guðbjörnsson managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Retis Akureyri's supporters crossed their fingers, but Falgeir Guðbjörnsson was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 97 minutes into the match, Bender Garði's goal looked a bit too open when Falgeir Guðbjörnsson came free, but Geirfinnur Kristjánsson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. For all the effort they put into the match, the Bender Garði players left disappointed. They had fought hard, but couldn't break down the home team's defense. The match ended in a win for Retis Akureyri.
