After a defensive mix-up in Coulsdon City's zone, Garry Fairfax stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Darryl Hollingsworth came out of the goal and Garry Fairfax tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Fred Paget hit a great freekick 5 minutes into the match. Coulsdon City's Darryl Hollingsworth proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 8th minute of the match, managed to save Coulsdon City from getting a goal against them. Piers Tinker blasted a shot towards the goal in the 10th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Darryl Hollingsworth having to make a save. In the 13th minute the ball was on its way in behind Coulsdon City's goalkeeper Darryl Hollingsworth, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Coulsdon City's Darryl Hollingsworth played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Russell Deveraux in the 14th minute of play. Dennis Hampton kicked well hit freekick during the 15th minute of the match. Piers Tinker fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 16th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Darryl Hollingsworth having to interfere. Russell Deveraux was extremely unlucky when he, in the 18th minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. Piers Tinker might have been able to make a better finish in the 20th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Darryl Hollingsworth. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Piers Tinker ran back to his position shaking his head. Piers Tinker fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 22nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Darryl Hollingsworth having to interfere. 23 minutes into the game, Dennis Hampton was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Coulsdon City's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Huyton United the free kick. In the 23rd match minute, Coulsdon City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Dennis Hampton to maneuver through the defense. Russell Deveraux received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 25th minute. Darryl Hollingsworth tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Darryl Hollingsworth made an important save on a dangerous shot by Piers Tinker in the 30th minute. Kristopher Beasley showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Edward Neville, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Russell Deveraux in the 40th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Darryl Hollingsworth prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Christian Moxon sent away a hard shot on goal in the 44th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Darryl Hollingsworth made a fantastic save in the 45th minute, when Piers Tinker sent off a good shot on target. In the 47th minute, Huyton United's Russell Deveraux ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Darryl Hollingsworth. Darryl Hollingsworth yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-0. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 1-0.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Edward Neville was the one to do the kick off. Edward Neville fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 57th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Kristopher Beasley having to interfere. In the 59th minute, Owen Watts hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 60th minute, Gareth Baldwin fired a really elegant long shot, but Kristopher Beasley threw himself and managed to get hold of the ball just in front of the right post. Edward Neville sent away a hard shot on goal in the 65th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Christian Moxon received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 67th minute. Kristopher Beasley tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 70 minutes into the match, Christian Moxon notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of Huyton United's Kristopher Beasley. Kristopher Beasley was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Huyton United's Piers Tinker got a good chance for a goal in the 74th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After 75 played minutes Coulsdon City got a freekick which was hit by Fred Paget. 76 minutes into the match, Coulsdon City's goal looked a bit too open when Piers Tinker came free, but Darryl Hollingsworth reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When Edward Neville came up free with the goalie in the 77th minute, the Coulsdon City fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Edward Neville couldn't finish the play. 80 minutes into the game, Vic Grigg was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Huyton United's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Coulsdon City the free kick. In the 80th match minute, Huyton United was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Vic Grigg to maneuver through the defense. If Dennis Hampton had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 90th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Christian Moxon could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 91st minute of the match, but Kristopher Beasley made a huge save. Darryl Hollingsworth took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Piers Tinker, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. When Antony Willoughby fell near the penalty area in the 96th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Coulsdon City's protests and gave Antony Willoughby a yellow card for diving instead. Jeers came from both ends of the stadium when the final whistle went. Neither team had looked impressive and the draw seeemd a fair result.
