In the 20th match minute, Marinheiros was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Júlio Figueiredo to maneuver through the defense. The crowd rose to their feet as SC Gildinho's Fábio Pinho slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Sebastião Figueiredo. That made the score 1-0 after 23 minutes of play. Hélder Paiva's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Sebastião Figueiredo read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 27th minute of play. Fábio Pinho fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 35th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Sebastião Figueiredo having to interfere. SC Gildinho's supporters crossed their fingers, but Hélder Paiva was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Júlio Figueiredo stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. In the 58th minute, Júlio Figueiredo got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Sebastião Figueiredo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Hélder Paiva in the 78th minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Adolfo Moniz got free with Duarte Pinto in the 81st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. An unexpectedly hard shot by Hélder Paiva in the 83rd minute of play forced Marinheiros's goalkeeper Sebastião Figueiredo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The Marinheiros fans' excitement grew in the 93rd match minute when Marinheiros's Júlio Figueiredo looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 2-1 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Marinheiros's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
