To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 17 minutes into the match, Lúcio Ferreira had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Emílio Pinho. Lagoinhas's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Lúcio Ferreira was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. After a rather tough play, Gaia's Luís Magalhães got a free kick in the 20th minute. Domingos Melo struck a weak shot in the 23rd minute. Mário Esteves didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Lagoinhas. 25 minutes into the match, Gaia's goalkeeper Mário Esteves had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Paulo Lima. Emílio Pinho took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from António Resende, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Lúcio Ferreira struck a weak shot in the 33rd minute. Emílio Pinho didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Gaia. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

If Domingos Melo had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 59th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Mário Esteves didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Paulo Lima went, in the 61st minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. Emílio Pinho made an important save on a dangerous shot by Lúcio Ferreira in the 68th minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 72nd minute, António Resende managed to get in a good position for a shot. Gaia's supporters rose to their feet, but António Resende was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Emílio Pinho breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. António Resende received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 74th minute. Emílio Pinho tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Thanks to some nice moves Lúcio Ferreira could shoot a difficult shot in the 75th minute, which Emílio Pinho however easily saved by the left post. Emílio Pinho didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Lúcio Ferreira went, in the 77th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-2 was the resulting score. Eusébio Leiria sent away a hard shot on goal in the 86th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 88 minutes into the match, Paulo Lima had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Mário Esteves. Gaia's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Paulo Lima was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-2. In the 93rd play minute Lúcio Ferreira came free and shot an unsuspected shot which went into goal from the right pole behind a surprised Emílio Pinho. 2-3. The Gaia supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Gaia would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
