Paulo Setúbal dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. Tiago Costa showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Francisco Branco, who was totally free with the ball in the 17th minute. In the 19th match minute, Vilarinha was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nuno Abreu to maneuver through the defense. After a defensive mix-up in Vilarinha's zone, Xavier Assis stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Paulo Setúbal came out of the goal and Xavier Assis tried to chip the ball over his head. An unexpected shot in the 43rd minute by Francisco Branco got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.
