When the match had gone on for 4 minutes, David De Boeck put it in 1-0 from a short distance just to the right of Adolfo Rangel. After 7 played minutes Beira Mar SC got a freekick which was hit by Aparício Machado. Sálvio Vilas Boas made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Burkhard Bieberstein in the 11th minute of play. 12 minutes into the match, Clube Desportivo Benfica's goalkeeper Adolfo Rangel had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Ciccio Mascia. With a little luck, Clube Desportivo Benfica's Adolfo Rangel got control of the ball when David De Boeck tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 17th match minute, Beira Mar SC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Olavo Taveira to maneuver through the defense. Beira Mar SC's Sálvio Vilas Boas played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Eriberto Donatello in the 18th minute of play. Clube Desportivo Benfica were awarded a corner in the 19th minute after Beira Mar SC's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Alexandre Ponte took the corner. The corner led Clube Desportivo Benfica's Alexandre Ponte to fire away a dangerous shot which Sálvio Vilas Boas despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. In the 25th minute Burkhard Bieberstein shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sálvio Vilas Boas saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Sálvio Vilas Boas showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Eriberto Donatello in the 31st minute of the match. Sálvio Vilas Boas took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Alexandre Ponte, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Sálvio Vilas Boas made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Burkhard Bieberstein in the 36th minute of play. In the 37th minute Clube Desportivo Benfica were awarded a corner. Alexandre Ponte went to the cornerflag to take it. Alexandre Ponte made a great header on Clube Desportivo Benfica's corner, it was just that Beira Mar SC's Sálvio Vilas Boas managed to reach the ball for a save. Louis Fragou received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 40th minute. Sálvio Vilas Boas tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Beira Mar SC's Alexandre Torcato got a good chance for a goal in the 46th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Pedro Lucena's late challenge caught a Clube Desportivo Benfica's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Pedro Lucena helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Clube Desportivo Benfica booed when Beira Mar SC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 52 match minutes in a wonderful position. Pedro Lucena didn't get a good kick on the ball. Sálvio Vilas Boas was a little too slow when Eriberto Donatello got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 53rd minute. The score was now 2-3. Adolfo Rangel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Hipólito Amado in the 61st minute of play. Alexandre Ponte could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 66th minute of the match, but Sálvio Vilas Boas made a huge save. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Burkhard Bieberstein in the 68th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Sálvio Vilas Boas saved Beira Mar SC from getting behind. Beira Mar SC's Sálvio Vilas Boas proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 69th minute of the match, managed to save Beira Mar SC from getting a goal against them. Beira Mar SC's Sálvio Vilas Boas played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Li Hong Qi in the 70th minute of play. Sálvio Vilas Boas took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Li Hong Qi, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Beira Mar SC's Tarcísio Bento was substituted for Telmo Pires. In the 73rd minute of the match Clube Desportivo Benfica got a corner. Beira Mar SC's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Alexandre Ponte ran over to the corner to take the kick. A well-hit corner resulted in Li Hong Qi heading the ball towards the goal, but to his dismay he misdirected it and missed the goal completely. An unexpectedly hard shot by Joélson Moreira in the 76th minute of play forced Clube Desportivo Benfica's goalkeeper Adolfo Rangel to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. David De Boeck fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 77th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Adolfo Rangel having to interfere. Beira Mar SC's Caio Barroso was substituted for Pedro Lucena. The supporters of Clube Desportivo Benfica booed when Beira Mar SC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 82 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ciccio Mascia didn't get a good kick on the ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Burkhard Bieberstein in the 83rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Sálvio Vilas Boas saved Beira Mar SC from getting behind. When Clube Desportivo Benfica's Burkhard Bieberstein in the 83rd minute got a chance for a shot 83rd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Beira Mar SC's goalie prevented a goal. Eriberto Donatello's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Sálvio Vilas Boas read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 85th minute of play. Adolfo Rangel took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Alberto Carvalhais, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Adolfo Rangel came out of the goal in the 91st minute to try and stop a shot by Beira Mar SC's David De Boeck. But to his dismay, David De Boeck quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 3-4. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Clube Desportivo Benfica had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
