Seating: 8, VIP seats: 0) North Shields's Pat Smith started the match with a crisp pass. The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. An unexpectedly hard shot by Piers Wiley in the 11th minute of play forced North Shields's goalkeeper Russell Pamplin to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Teddy Croyden had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 12th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 14 minutes into the match, Purfleet's Piers Wiley sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Russell Pamplin narrowly saved just below the crossbar. After some fancy dribbling in the 16th minute, Teddy Croyden managed to get in a good position for a shot. Purfleet's supporters rose to their feet, but Teddy Croyden was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Russell Pamplin breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. When John Bedford fell near the penalty area in the 21st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Purfleet's protests and gave John Bedford a yellow card for diving instead. If Al Marshall had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 26th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 29th minute Piers Wiley shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Russell Pamplin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Al Marshall fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 31st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Marty Hughes having to interfere. 35 minutes into the match, North Shields's goal looked a bit too open when Piers Wiley came free, but Russell Pamplin reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After a rather tough play, North Shields's Francis Swain got a free kick in the 36th minute. Pat Smith received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 38th minute. Marty Hughes tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. John Bedford was shown his second yellow card after 41 minutes, following a rather ugly tackle on opponent. That was the end of his participation in the match. After a rather tough play, Purfleet's John Bedford got a free kick in the 42nd minute. Francis Swain 's late challenge caught a Purfleet's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Francis Swain helped the player get up and apologised. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Teddy Croyden was the one to do the kick off. Purfleet's Teddy Croyden got a good chance for a goal in the 52nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 56th minute, Pat Smith hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Teddy Croyden sent away a hard shot on goal in the 60th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Piers Wiley fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 62nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Russell Pamplin having to interfere. In the 63rd minute, Pat Smith hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Teddy Croyden 's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Russell Pamplin firmly grabbed it by the left post. Teddy Croyden sent away a hard shot on goal in the 68th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The supporters of Purfleet booed when North Shields was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 69 match minutes in a wonderful position. Pat Smith didn't get a good kick on the ball. North Shields's Russell Pamplin proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 72nd minute of the match, managed to save North Shields from getting a goal against them. The audience thought a goal was coming when Teddy Croyden got free with Russell Pamplin in the 74th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 85th minute the ball was on its way in behind Purfleet's goalkeeper Marty Hughes, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Al Marshall received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 90th minute. Marty Hughes tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When Teddy Croyden came up free with the goalie in the 95th minute, the Purfleet fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Teddy Croyden couldn't finish the play.
