Laurence Workman fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 4th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Owen Osbourn having to interfere. When Ron Graydon fell near the penalty area in the 5th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Atherton's protests and gave Ron Graydon a yellow card for diving instead. 6 minutes into the match, Cove's Marc Saunders sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Owen Osbourn narrowly saved just below the crossbar. If Marc Saunders had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 11th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Owen Osbourn showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Marc Saunders, who was totally free with the ball in the 15th minute. 17 minutes into the game, Cove's Laurence Workman nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Owen Osbourn made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. Owen Osbourn made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Marc Saunders in the 25th minute of play. Laurence Workman blasted a shot towards the goal in the 26th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Owen Osbourn having to make a save. Martyn Martin kicked well hit freekick during the 27th minute of the match. In the 30th match minute, Cove was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Marc Saunders to maneuver through the defense. When Laurence Workman came up free with the goalie in the 45th minute, the Cove fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Laurence Workman couldn't finish the play. In the 47th match minute, Atherton was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Luke Manson to maneuver through the defense.
Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Vinnie Hewitt to make the kick off. After having played for 52 minutes, Marc Saunders managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Cove's supporters crossed their fingers, but Marc Saunders was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Atherton's Owen Osbourn proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 54th minute of the match, managed to save Atherton from getting a goal against them. Owen Osbourn made a fantastic save in the 55th minute, when Laurence Workman sent off a good shot on target. The supporters of Cove booed when Atherton was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 58 match minutes in a wonderful position. Mitch Thorn didn't get a good kick on the ball. When Laurence Workman came up free with the goalie in the 59th minute, the Cove fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Laurence Workman couldn't finish the play. Vinnie Hewitt received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 63rd minute. Sammy Chadwick tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. A long shot from Barrie Bloom in the 79th minute of play was well struck, but Owen Osbourn made a really good save at the right post. When Cove's Marc Saunders in the 80th minute got a chance for a shot 80th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Atherton's goalie prevented a goal. Sammy Chadwick showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Rob Johnson in the 85th minute of the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Laurence Workman got free with Owen Osbourn in the 93rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After a rather tough play, Atherton's Norman Fowler got a free kick in the 96th minute. The teams fought very hard right up to the final whistle. Both sets of players were happy to go away with a draw.
