After a defensive mix-up in Clevedon AFC's zone, Garth Green stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Leo Cook came out of the goal and Garth Green tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Bart Wood made an important save on a dangerous shot by Stefan Woolcock in the 18th minute. If Glenn Ratcliffe had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 20th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 21 minutes, Pete Fenton mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Clevedon AFC and the Hoylake players grew even worse after the yellow card. Owen Smith was slow to take the kick. During this time Hoylake's players had a chance to rest. After the first half Hoylake were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Garth Green made a kick off. Glenn Ratcliffe received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 53rd minute. Leo Cook tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The supporters of Hoylake booed when Clevedon AFC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 58 match minutes in a wonderful position. In the 70th minute the ball was on its way in behind Hoylake's goalkeeper Bart Wood, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. The tension between the Hoylake and the Clevedon AFC players grew even worse after the yellow card. Glenn Ratcliffe who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 98thth minute tested the skills of Leo Cook when he managed to save the team from getting behind. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Hoylake walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
