The audience was convinced that Jude Mayfield's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Archie Bland was relentless in the 11th minute of the game. After some fancy dribbling in the 13th minute, Gaz Shipton managed to get in a good position for a shot. Fowey's supporters rose to their feet, but Gaz Shipton was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Vic Westerby breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Francis Ashworth could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 16th minute of the match, but Vic Westerby made a huge save. An unexpectedly hard shot by Barney Lomas in the 42nd minute of play forced Fowey's goalkeeper Archie Bland to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Vic Westerby showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Chip Gavan in the 47th minute of the match. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

After a rather tough play, Exeter's Julian Clough got a free kick in the 74th minute. Francis Ashworth recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 75th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 77 minutes into the match, Chip Gavan notched a goal, 1-0, to the right of Exeter's Vic Westerby. Vic Westerby was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. When Fowey's Francis Ashworth in the 82nd minute got a chance for a shot 82nd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Exeter's goalie prevented a goal. Francis Ashworth sent away a hard shot on goal in the 84th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance.
