In the 7th minute Reggie Hislop shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Matthew Westwood saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 9 minutes into the game, Lloyd Jewson was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Springfield City's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Basildon FC the free kick. A collision led to Springfield City getting a freekick after 9 minutes play. Lloyd Jewson hit a great ball. Olly Dexter took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 10th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Matthew Westwood. Springfield City's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. In the 13th minute, Jason Metcalfe hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. If Pete Gates had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 14th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Reggie Hislop received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 18th minute. Matthew Westwood tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Kirk Machin blasted a shot towards the goal in the 27th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Andre Ansell having to make a save. After some fancy dribbling in the 32nd minute, Reggie Hislop managed to get in a good position for a shot. Basildon FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Reggie Hislop was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Matthew Westwood breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Pete Gates fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 34th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Matthew Westwood having to interfere.
