Cliff Dobson kicked well hit freekick during the 3rd minute of the match. With a little luck, Lovedean AFC's Simon Winship got control of the ball when Tom Rundle tried to sneak it across the goal line. After a rather tough play, Godalming's Calvin Hill got a free kick in the 7th minute. 10 minutes into the match, Lovedean AFC's goal looked a bit too open when Marty Hopton came free, but Simon Winship reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The audience was convinced that Sidney Hollingsworth's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Wes Starr was relentless in the 14th minute of the game. After a defensive mix-up in Lovedean AFC's zone, Tom Rundle stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Simon Winship came out of the goal and Tom Rundle tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. When Eric Lampard fell near the penalty area in the 17th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Lovedean AFC's protests and gave Eric Lampard a yellow card for diving instead. Marty Hopton sent away a hard shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Simon Winship made an important save on a dangerous shot by Tom Rundle in the 24th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Marty Hopton in the 32nd minute of play forced Lovedean AFC's goalkeeper Simon Winship to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 43rd minute, Lovedean AFC's goalie took a deep sigh of relief after Marty Hopton fired away a hard shot that went just outside the left post. After 45 played minutes Marty Hopton rounded Lovedean AFC's defense and shot a beautiful shot into goal via left pole - 1-0. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 1-0.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Marty Hopton to make the kick off. In the 51st minute, Eric Lampard hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The supporters of Godalming booed when Lovedean AFC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 54 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cliff Dobson didn't get a good kick on the ball. Godalming's Wes Starr proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 59th minute of the match, managed to save Godalming from getting a goal against them. In the 61stth minute of the game Marty Hopton who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Lovedean AFC's Simon Winship was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Lovedean AFC's Simon Winship played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Tom Rundle in the 63rd minute of play. When Tom Rundle came up free with the goalie in the 85th minute, the Godalming fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Tom Rundle couldn't finish the play. Lovedean AFC's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
