Chelsea Football Club's defense didn't have a chance, in the 36th minute, when Bart Furlong scored to the left of an out of position Billy Hicks, making the score, 2-0. 42 minutes into the match, Chelsea Football Club's goal looked a bit too open when Bart Furlong came free, but Billy Hicks reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. With a little luck, Chelsea Football Club's Billy Hicks got control of the ball when Sonny Bennett tried to sneak it across the goal line. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Bart Furlong made a kick off. After a defensive mix-up in Chelsea Football Club's zone, Bart Furlong stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Billy Hicks came out of the goal and Bart Furlong tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. A collision led to Chelsea Football Club getting a freekick after 90 minutes play. Ivan Blythe hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Leo Seagrave in the 91st minute of play forced Chelsea Football Club's goalkeeper Billy Hicks to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Chelsea Football Club's Billy Hicks played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Allan Ellis in the 93rd minute of play. In the 96th minute Allan Ellis shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Billy Hicks saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Crewe's Sonny Bennett got a good chance for a goal in the 98th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Crewe's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
