The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When Cottered's Paul Wardill in the 4th minute got a chance for a shot 4th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Denholme City's goalie prevented a goal. Sean Gaskell struck a weak shot in the 6th minute. A wasted opportunity for Denholme City. 13 minutes into the match, Cottered's Damian Shields sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Niall Darby narrowly saved just below the crossbar. After 17 minutes, Dean Bittner mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Denholme City and the Cottered players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 17 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Denholme City! In the 19th minute there was a penalty for Cottered. Syd Short stepped forward and shot the ball to the right of a diving Niall Darby. 1-0. When Dale Peat came up free with the goalie in the 23rd minute, the Denholme City fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Dale Peat couldn't finish the play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Damian Shields got free with Niall Darby in the 26th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. The supporters of Cottered booed when Denholme City was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 28 match minutes in a wonderful position. Scott Ansell didn't get a good kick on the ball. After having played for 29 minutes, Paul Wardill managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Cottered's supporters crossed their fingers, but Paul Wardill was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 32nd minute Dale Peat shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Carl Blakewell saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 32 played minutes Cottered got a freekick which was hit by Felix Stonehouse. Paul Wardill sent away a hard shot on goal in the 37th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. An unexpectedly hard shot by Paul Wardill in the 39th minute of play forced Denholme City's goalkeeper Niall Darby to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The wind increased when Paul Wardill made the kick off in the second half. Denholme City's Barney Sherman shoveled away a really nice long shot in the 51st minute of play. The shot was stopped by Carl Blakewell but with some difficulty. When Cottered's Damian Shields in the 56th minute got a chance for a shot 56th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. After 66 minutes, Paul Wardill made it 2-0 with a short kick to the right side. Denholme City's Niall Darby tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. Felix Stonehouse kicked well hit freekick during the 72nd minute of the match. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Damian Shields in the 74th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Niall Darby saved Denholme City from getting behind. After having played for 77 minutes, Paul Wardill managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Cottered's supporters crossed their fingers, but Paul Wardill was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 83 minutes into the match, Denholme City's goal looked a bit too open when Damian Shields came free, but Niall Darby reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Cottered's Carl Blakewell played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Sean Gaskell in the 85th minute of play. When Felix Stonehouse fell near the penalty area in the 87th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Cottered's protests and gave Felix Stonehouse a yellow card for diving instead. Gaz Brazier, 88 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. In the 90th minute of the match, Dale Peat got a very nice opportunity to score, but Carl Blakewell was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. Niall Darby took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Paul Wardill, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Cottered fans cheered their team off the field, for while Denholme City had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
