The audience was convinced that René de Freitas's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Harmen Dongen was relentless in the 4th minute of the game. When the match clock showed 27 minutes, the score became 1-1 when René de Freitas sped through Wiene SC's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Harmen Dongen. The supporters of Laurens booed when Wiene SC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 38 match minutes in a wonderful position. Rick Otten didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by René de Freitas in the 44th minute of play forced Wiene SC's goalkeeper Harmen Dongen to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell René de Freitas to make the kick off. Harmen Dongen took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Maarten van der Saar, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side.
