The player immediately received a yellow card. In the 11th minute, one of Fortuna Sittard:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Fortuna Sittard. The referee gave Overveen a penalty, 13 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Bennie Spijker, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Fortuna Sittard's Florian van Galen. 0-1. Florian van Galen made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ger Polak in the 18th minute of play. 24 minutes into the match, Fortuna Sittard's goal looked a bit too open when Ted Willemse came free, but Florian van Galen reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Jan Snoeks took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 37th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Florian van Galen. Fortuna Sittard's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Overveen's zone, Rudolf Veldman stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Martin Hilhorst came out of the goal and Rudolf Veldman tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Erben Veldhuis sent away a hard shot on goal in the 42nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Gio Thole fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 44th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Martin Hilhorst having to interfere.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Benjamin Bouma made a kick off. Ted Willemse could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 52nd minute of the match, but Florian van Galen made a huge save. When Remond Stuijvenberg fell near the penalty area in the 53rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Fortuna Sittard's protests and gave Remond Stuijvenberg a yellow card for diving instead. In the 53rd minute, one of Fortuna Sittard:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Fortuna Sittard. Gio Thole struck a weak shot in the 58th minute. Martin Hilhorst didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Fortuna Sittard. When Erben Veldhuis came up free with the goalie in the 64th minute, the Fortuna Sittard fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Erben Veldhuis couldn't finish the play. With 71 minutes on the clock, Remond Stuijvenberg commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card.
