When Alvaro Bontempi came up free with the goalie in the 4th minute, the Chiavari fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Alvaro Bontempi couldn't finish the play. After 13 played minutes, SAN MARINO's Corrado Raffa shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Anthony De Francesco came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in SAN MARINO reached it. If Dino Mazzocchetti had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 18th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Anthony De Francesco took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Amedeo Di Giambattista, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Dino Mazzocchetti sent away a hard shot on goal in the 21st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Alvaro Bontempi recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 22nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 26 minutes into the match, SAN MARINO's goalkeeper Domenico Caneva had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Alvaro Bontempi. In the 31st minute, Antonio Silvagni hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Chiavari's Dino Mazzocchetti got a good chance for a goal in the 36th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. SAN MARINO's Domenico Caneva played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Dino Mazzocchetti in the 38th minute of play.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Dino Mazzocchetti stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Domenico Caneva made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Alvaro Bontempi in the 52nd minute of play. In the 53rd minute Fortunato Sacchi shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Anthony De Francesco saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 75th minute, Edmondo Pacella hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. SAN MARINO's Amedeo Di Giambattista got a good chance for a goal in the 76th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. SAN MARINO's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Chiavari the free kick. Ercole Terrasi hit a great freekick 91 minutes into the match. If Dino Mazzocchetti had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 92nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The final whistle blew with the score still tied, and both teams left the pitch thinking about the missed chances that could have given their team the win.
