Everyone was convinced a goal was close when Roubaix's Thierry Benoit in the 40th minute lifted the ball towards the upper right corner, but Eddy Aube was perfectly placed and prevented a goal for Caen through an amazing save. In the 43rd minute, Maurice Dufourg got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. If Basile Willmann had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 45th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Thierry Benoit made a kick off. After having played for 52 minutes, Jean-Christophe Spielmann managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Roubaix's supporters crossed their fingers, but Jean-Christophe Spielmann was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Maximilien Billy in the 57th minute of play forced Caen's goalkeeper Eddy Aube to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 68th minute of the match Roubaix got a corner. Caen's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Michel Bourgade ran over to the corner to take the kick. Jean-Christophe Spielmann received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 71st minute. Eddy Aube tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 77 minutes of play, Caen's Basile Willmann made it 1-3 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Tanguy Meloni was left in no man's land by his defense there! After a defensive mix-up in Caen's zone, Jean-Christophe Spielmann stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Eddy Aube came out of the goal and Jean-Christophe Spielmann tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Jean-Christophe Spielmann fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 96th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Eddy Aube having to interfere. Eddy Aube showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Thierry Benoit, who was totally free with the ball in the 98th minute. The Roubaix supporters were disappointed that their team didn't take anything from the match, despite matching Caen's performance. The match ended with a win for Caen.
