Theodore Rudelle who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 17thth minute tested the skills of Didier Auriol when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Didier Auriol made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Claude Camy in the 18th minute of play. In the 20th minute, Theodore Rudelle got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 22nd minute of the match, Claude Camy tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Didier Auriol saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. Tanguy Beranger might have been able to make a better finish in the 23rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Bruno Deniel. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Tanguy Beranger ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 24th match minute, Argent was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Romain Giacometti to maneuver through the defense. Jacques Froidefond fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 25th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Bruno Deniel having to interfere. Jacques Froidefond's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Bruno Deniel read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 27th minute of play. In the 46th minute, Georges Martinache ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Bruno Deniel was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-2. Disappointed in the 0-2 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

An unexpectedly hard shot by Theodore Rudelle in the 59th minute of play forced Gières's goalkeeper Didier Auriol to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Claude Camy sent away a hard shot on goal in the 61st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Didier Auriol stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Claude Camy's shot from short distance in the 65th minute. The supporters of Argent booed when Gières was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 67 match minutes in a wonderful position. Tanguy Beranger didn't get a good kick on the ball. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Gières would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
