If Hugo Boissel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 10th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 12th minute, Jean-Marie Vallet ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Sofiane Leroi was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. Franck Chollet showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Hugo Boissel, who was totally free with the ball in the 15th minute. After a defensive mix-up in Gentilly's zone, Jean-Christophe Prades stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Sofiane Leroi came out of the goal and Jean-Christophe Prades tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Jean-Christophe Prades's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Sofiane Leroi read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 27th minute of play. Jean-Christophe Prades sent away a hard shot on goal in the 32nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. If Jean-Christophe Prades had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 39th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The supporters of Gentilly booed when Rennes was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 46 match minutes in a wonderful position. Francois-Xavier Coffinet didn't get a good kick on the ball. Gentilly's Maxime Rivier shoveled away a really nice long shot in the 48th minute of play. The shot was stopped by Franck Chollet but with some difficulty. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.
Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Jean-Christophe Prades to make the kick off. When Leonard Guenon fell near the penalty area in the 52nd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Gentilly's protests and gave Leonard Guenon a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to Gentilly getting a freekick after 52 minutes play. Leonard Guenon hit a great ball. Jean-Marie Vallet could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 53rd minute of the match, but Sofiane Leroi made a huge save. Rennes's Franck Chollet played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Thibaut Soria in the 57th minute of play. Leonard Guenon kicked well hit freekick during the 58th minute of the match. If Jean-Christophe Prades had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 61st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 64 minutes into the game, Patrice Sabatier was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Gentilly's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Rennes the free kick. In the 71st match minute, Rennes was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Emmanuel Hachet to maneuver through the defense. After a rather tough play, Rennes's Romuald Peixoto got a free kick in the 76th minute. Hugo Boissel fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 79th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Franck Chollet having to interfere. After 80 played minutes Rennes got a freekick which was hit by Florentin Joulie. After a defensive mix-up in Rennes's zone, Hugo Boissel stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Sofiane Leroi made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Jean-Christophe Prades in the 84th minute of play. Thibaut Soria fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 87th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Franck Chollet having to interfere. Sofiane Leroi took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jean-Christophe Prades, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Hugo Boissel struck a weak shot in the 95th minute. Franck Chollet didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Gentilly. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Rennes walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
