Athletic de Bilbao's Haimar Izaguirre played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Iker Dean in the 4th minute of play. After 10 played minutes Athletic de Bilbao got a freekick which was hit by Gonsalve Mondejar. When Alfons Sobrado came up free with the goalie in the 12th minute, the REAL MADRID FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Alfons Sobrado couldn't finish the play. In the 14th match minute, Athletic de Bilbao was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Gustavo Mendez to maneuver through the defense. An unexpectedly hard shot by Alfons Sobrado in the 24th minute of play forced Athletic de Bilbao's goalkeeper Haimar Izaguirre to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Alfons Sobrado scored 1-1 in the 26th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Haimar Izaguirre, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. 31 minutes into the match, REAL MADRID FC's goalkeeper Carlos Zárate had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Isaac Verdeja. After 39 minutes Athletic de Bilbao's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Timo Macho who took care of the corner kick. After 45 played minutes REAL MADRID FC got a freekick which was hit by Eliseo Lobera.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Fábio Ocaña to make the kick off. In the 59th minute Fábio Ocaña shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Carlos Zárate saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Carlos Zárate showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Gustavo Mendez, who was totally free with the ball in the 65th minute. In the 66th minute Isaac Verdeja shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Carlos Zárate saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Alfons Sobrado received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 71st minute. Haimar Izaguirre tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Carlos Zárate didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Gustavo Mendez went, in the 76th minute, to the upper right corner, 2-1 was the resulting score. 80 minutes into the match, REAL MADRID FC's goal looked a bit too open when Fábio Ocaña came free, but Carlos Zárate reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in REAL MADRID FC's zone, Gustavo Mendez stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Carlos Zárate came out of the goal and Gustavo Mendez tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Alfons Sobrado received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 96th minute. Haimar Izaguirre tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Athletic de Bilbao's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
