Kim Mehring started the match with the kick off in front of an excited audience. Till Hofmann received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 3rd minute. Paul Appeltrath tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When the match clock showed 5 minutes, the score became 0-1 when Ephraim Balog sped through Riederwald's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Paul Appeltrath. If Ephraim Balog had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 10th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Mathias Brabant made an important save on a dangerous shot by Andre-Yann Hospelt in the 16th minute. 20 minutes into the game, Kim Mehring recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Mathias Brabant. Kim Mehring showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-1. In the 23rd match minute, Riederwald was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Hendrik Ullmann to maneuver through the defense. Till Hofmann hit a great freekick 25 minutes into the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Kim Mehring in the 32nd minute of play forced Hamburger SV's goalkeeper Mathias Brabant to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Ephraim Balog received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 35th minute. Paul Appeltrath tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Till Hofmann fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 66th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Paul Appeltrath having to interfere. Ephraim Balog sent away a hard shot on goal in the 68th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Dustin Sylvester hit a great freekick 69 minutes into the match. Ephraim Balog might have been able to make a better finish in the 71st minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Paul Appeltrath. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Ephraim Balog ran back to his position shaking his head. After 73 minutes, Eugen Wittbusch mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Riederwald and the Hamburger SV players grew even worse after the yellow card. When Gunter Wahlberg fell near the penalty area in the 96th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Hamburger SV's protests and gave Gunter Wahlberg a yellow card for diving instead.
