An unexpectedly hard shot by Vaclav Nahles in the 33rd minute of play forced Opladener bv's goalkeeper Ekkehard Eisel to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Wilhelm Wörner fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 36th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Albrecht Laing having to interfere. Ekkehard Eisel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Vaclav Nahles in the 42nd minute of play. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

52 minutes into the match, Wattenscheid's Fabian Liche sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Ekkehard Eisel narrowly saved just below the crossbar. After some fancy dribbling in the 54th minute, Fabian Liche managed to get in a good position for a shot. Wattenscheid's supporters rose to their feet, but Fabian Liche was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Ekkehard Eisel breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 57th minute, Fabian Liche left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Wattenscheid fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-1. An unexpectedly hard shot by Wilhelm Wörner in the 62nd minute of play forced Wattenscheid's goalkeeper Albrecht Laing to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After having played for 64 minutes, Krister Neubauer managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Wattenscheid's supporters crossed their fingers, but Krister Neubauer was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Volker Baum sent away a hard shot on goal in the 80th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. In the 81st minute, Wattenscheid's Vaclav Nahles dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 1-3. Wattenscheid's Albrecht Laing played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Volker Baum in the 85th minute of play. Albrecht Laing showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Wilhelm Wörner, who was totally free with the ball in the 86th minute. The audience thought a goal was coming when Fabian Liche got free with Ekkehard Eisel in the 88th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Fabian Liche might have been able to make a better finish in the 89th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Ekkehard Eisel. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Fabian Liche ran back to his position shaking his head. With a little luck, Opladener bv's Ekkehard Eisel got control of the ball when Fabian Liche tried to sneak it across the goal line. The supporters of Wattenscheid booed when Opladener bv was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 90 match minutes in a wonderful position. Heinrich Vinkemeier didn't get a good kick on the ball. Vaclav Nahles received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 91st minute. Ekkehard Eisel tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere.
