In the 3rd minute, Birger Benda got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Bernd Maeth fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 7th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Waldo Dörr having to interfere. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Matt Gillesen during the 9th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In a very dangerous position, a player in Verlautenheide FSV fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 9th minute. Penalty! The referee gave Groß Wassens a penalty, 11 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Ralph Mars, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Verlautenheide FSV's Marc Garbe. 0-1. The supporters of Groß Wassens booed when Verlautenheide FSV was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 15 match minutes in a wonderful position. Steven Dorsch didn't get a good kick on the ball. When Groß Wassens's Egmont Bendel, in the 16th minute, received a pass right in front of the net, it looked like a certain goal, but his shot went outside. A wasted opportunity for Groß Wassens. Peer Schnur hit a great freekick 20 minutes into the match. Verlautenheide FSV's Bernd Maeth got a good chance for a goal in the 23rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 26th minute of the match, Jens Ballack tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Waldo Dörr saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. The audience thought a goal was coming when Bernd Maeth got free with Waldo Dörr in the 33rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Egmont Bendel recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 35th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Verlautenheide FSV's zone, Birger Benda stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Marc Garbe came out of the goal and Birger Benda tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Waldo Dörr showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Jens Ballack, who was totally free with the ball in the 47th minute. The Verlautenheide FSV players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Groß Wassens were winning 0-2.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Birger Benda was the one to do the kick off. Jens Ballack fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 54th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Waldo Dörr having to interfere. When Birger Benda came up free with the goalie in the 56th minute, the Groß Wassens fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Birger Benda couldn't finish the play. Marc Garbe made a fantastic save in the 58th minute, when Egmont Bendel sent off a good shot on target. Bernd Maeth sent away a hard shot on goal in the 71st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 74 minutes into the match, Groß Wassens's goal looked a bit too open when Jens Ballack came free, but Waldo Dörr reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Bernd Maeth received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 75th minute. Waldo Dörr tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Groß Wassens's Luka Raabe pulled a muscle in his back after 77 minutes and couldn't finish the game. Steven Dorsch charged in rather forcefully in the 77th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Steven Dorsch the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. After 78 played minutes Verlautenheide FSV got a freekick which was hit by Steven Dorsch. Egmont Bendel succeeded in the game's 80th minute to shoot an unreachable shot under the crossbar and scored - 0-3. Waldo Dörr took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jens Ballack, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After having played for 86 minutes, Bernd Maeth managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Verlautenheide FSV's supporters crossed their fingers, but Bernd Maeth was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. When Jens Ballack came up free with the goalie in the 98th minute, the Verlautenheide FSV fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Jens Ballack couldn't finish the play. The Verlautenheide FSV supporters were disappointed that their team didn't take anything from the match, despite matching Groß Wassens's performance. The match ended with a win for Groß Wassens.
