To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 4 minutes into the game, istanbulls's Alp Enginalp nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Berkem Bayındır made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. Jair Arizmendi sent away a hard shot on goal in the 8th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Jair Arizmendi fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 9th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Göksel Canfeda having to interfere. istanbulls's Göksel Canfeda proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 10th minute of the match, managed to save istanbulls from getting a goal against them. Göksel Canfeda took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Ömür Sabuncu, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Orlando Pirates were awarded a corner in the 13th minute after istanbulls's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Reşit Nazif took the corner. It was a well-played corner which Mümtazer Asya managed to volley towards the net. Unfortunately, he didn't get a great hit on the ball and it went out into the grandstand. In the 15thth minute of the game Patric Bierhoff who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Orlando Pirates's Berkem Bayındır was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. The audience was convinced that Patric Bierhoff's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Berkem Bayındır was relentless in the 17th minute of the game. In the 18th minute the ball was on its way in behind Orlando Pirates's goalkeeper Berkem Bayındır, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Patric Bierhoff's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Berkem Bayındır read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 29th minute of play. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Patric Bierhoff during the 32nd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Patric Bierhoff hit a great freekick 32 minutes into the match. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Berkem Bayındır prevented the ball from getting in the gole. istanbulls's Fatih Maradona got a good chance for a goal in the 43rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The supporters of Orlando Pirates booed when istanbulls was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 44 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ertan İdrisoğlu didn't get a good kick on the ball.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Patric Bierhoff stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Orlando Pirates's Ömür Sabuncu got a good chance for a goal in the 51st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar.
