But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Arkadiy Sysoev couldn't finish the play. When Lev Safonov fell near the penalty area in the 21st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Smolensk's protests and gave Lev Safonov a yellow card for diving instead. After a rather tough play, Smolensk's Lev Safonov got a free kick in the 21st minute. After a defensive mix-up in Smolensk's zone, Efim Loschatov stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Klim Nazarov came out of the goal and Efim Loschatov tried to chip the ball over his head. Rostislav Vershinin was really disappointed when he shot the ball just outside the right post instead of scoring a goal in the 26th minute. Birobidzhan's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. After 28 played minutes Birobidzhan got a freekick which was hit by Mikhail Zholkevskiy. Mikhail Zholkevskiy charged in rather forcefully in the 30th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Mikhail Zholkevskiy the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of Smolensk booed when Birobidzhan was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 31 match minutes in a wonderful position. Mikhail Zholkevskiy didn't get a good kick on the ball. Nikolay Beznikin fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 32nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Egor Noinskiy having to interfere. Nikolay Beznikin took the ball and in the 34 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Egor Noinskiy. Egor Noinskiy dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. Klim Nazarov showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Efim Loschatov, who was totally free with the ball in the 43rd minute. In the 46th minute, Eduard Girshovich hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.
Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Efim Loschatov to make the kick off. Arkadiy Sysoev sent away a hard shot on goal in the 54th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 57 minutes in the game, Nikolay Beznikin fired away an excellent shot, which passed to the side of the right post without Egor Noinskiy having to interfere. After having played for 59 minutes, Arkadiy Sysoev managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Smolensk's supporters crossed their fingers, but Arkadiy Sysoev was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After 60 minutes, Roman Rybakov mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Birobidzhan and the Smolensk players grew even worse after the yellow card. Smolensk's Arkadiy Sysoev got a good chance for a goal in the 87th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After some careless play in the Smolensk defense, Efim Loschatov kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Klim Nazarov. The Smolensk fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Klim Nazarov should have stopped the shot. The final whistle blew with the score still tied, and both teams left the pitch thinking about the missed chances that could have given their team the win.
