The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. A collision led to Nalchik getting a freekick after 15 minutes play. Roman Veresov hit a great ball. In the 16th minute Andrey Kamov shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Vladimir Kukurov saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. If Nikolay Gorodnitskiy had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 18th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. A hard shot 22 in the game by Pavel Pekarskiy from a close distance when the talented Vladimir Kukurov managed to make a qualified save. Nalchik's players were relieved. Georgiy Miroshin showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Aleksandr Orlov, who was totally free with the ball in the 23rd minute. Denis Dorohin took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 26th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Georgiy Miroshin. Surgut FC's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. The audience was convinced that Aleksandr Orlov's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Georgiy Miroshin was relentless in the 27th minute of the game. Timur Zhivin kicked well hit freekick during the 28th minute of the match. Igor Fedosov hit a great freekick 29 minutes into the match. The referee showed Boris Mozolin the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 38th minute, Boris Mozolin hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 41st minute of the match Nalchik got a corner. Surgut FC's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Anatoliy Benyumovich ran over to the corner to take the kick. After a rather tough play, Surgut FC's Sergey Poluhin got a free kick in the 43rd minute. Georgiy Miroshin showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Nikolay Gorodnitskiy, who was totally free with the ball in the 45th minute. Aleksandr Orlov received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 46th minute. Georgiy Miroshin tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Nalchik's Nikolay Gorodnitskiy got a good chance for a goal in the 51st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After 52 played minutes Surgut FC got a freekick which was hit by Timur Zhivin. Nikolay Gorodnitskiy recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 58th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Pavel Pekarskiy sent away a hard shot on goal in the 61st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The supporters of Surgut FC booed when Nalchik was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 67 match minutes in a wonderful position. Igor Fedosov didn't get a good kick on the ball. Aleksandr Orlov received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 74th minute. Georgiy Miroshin tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 78th minute the ball was on its way in behind Nalchik's goalkeeper Vladimir Kukurov, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Nalchik's Vladimir Kukurov played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Pavel Pekarskiy in the 79th minute of play. If Aleksandr Orlov had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 83rd minute.
