The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Petr Karpinovich during the 5th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In the 33rdth minute of the game Lubamir Mihalev who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Gomel's Anatoly Ragavik was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Anatoly Ragavik made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Lubamir Mihalev in the 35th minute of play. Svetamir Golubev struck a weak shot in the 36th minute. Vasily Sevastjanenko didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Gomel. After some fancy dribbling in the 41st minute, Lubamir Mihalev managed to get in a good position for a shot. Vitebsk's supporters rose to their feet, but Lubamir Mihalev was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Anatoly Ragavik breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Stanislav Andreev's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Anatoly Ragavik read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 43rd minute of play. If Lubamir Mihalev had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 44th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 48th minute, Lubamir Mihalev got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-0.
