With a couple of smart ball manuevers Julio Cristofol in the 2nd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Julio Vera saved Ecuador from getting behind. C.A.RIVER PLATE were awarded a corner in the 4th minute after Ecuador's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Aristides Emesto took the corner. C.A.RIVER PLATE's Sergio Sasoin was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Julio Vera in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. 5 minutes into the game, Julio Cristofol cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-0. Julio Vera was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. In the 8th minute Daniel Zorita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Fabrizio Masci saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in C.A.RIVER PLATE's zone, Daniel Zorita stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Fabrizio Masci came out of the goal and Daniel Zorita tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Daniel Zorita in the 17th minute of play forced C.A.RIVER PLATE's goalkeeper Fabrizio Masci to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of Ecuador booed when C.A.RIVER PLATE was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 20 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cleto Madaleno didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 20th minute of the match Daniel Zorita shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Fabrizio Masci showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Sergio Sasoin received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 22nd minute. Julio Vera tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Fabrizio Masci made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Felix Montenegro in the 24th minute of play. The audience was convinced that Crispin Stichler's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Julio Vera was relentless in the 31st minute of the game. C.A.RIVER PLATE's Fabrizio Masci played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Daniel Zorita in the 35th minute of play. Fabrizio Masci showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Daniel Zorita in the 42nd minute of the match. 47 minutes into the match, C.A.RIVER PLATE's Nuno Carmo sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Julio Vera narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 1-0.

The wind increased when Daniel Zorita made the kick off in the second half. C.A.RIVER PLATE's Fabrizio Masci played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Agustín Saelices in the 53rd minute of play. Julio Vera showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Julio Cristofol in the 55th minute of the match. Daniel Zorita fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 57th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Fabrizio Masci having to interfere. 59 minutes into the game, Salvador Totakoxe was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. C.A.RIVER PLATE's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Ecuador the free kick. Felix Montenegro received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 60th minute. Fabrizio Masci tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The supporters of C.A.RIVER PLATE booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 62 match minutes in a wonderful position. Juan Sebastián Puig didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 63rd minute of the match Dick Sundberg sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Julio Vera skillfully saved the ball. 66 minutes into the game, Daniel Zorita cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-1. Fabrizio Masci was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 69th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Daniel Zorita recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 73rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Julio Vera stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Julio Cristofol's shot from short distance in the 89th minute. Thanks to some nice moves Felix Montenegro could shoot a difficult shot in the 94th minute, which Fabrizio Masci however easily saved by the left post.
