The supporters of Ecuador booed when La Candela FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Rubén-Darío Feldmann didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a rather tough play, La Candela FC's Orlando Medina got a free kick in the 17th minute. 21 minutes into the match, La Candela FC's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Sancho came free, but Ruben Sánchez reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. La Candela FC's Ruben Sánchez played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Luis Andino in the 29th minute of play. After 32 played minutes La Candela FC got a freekick which was hit by Rubén-Darío Feldmann. 33 minutes into the match, La Candela FC's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Sancho came free, but Ruben Sánchez reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 40 played minutes La Candela FC got a freekick which was hit by Nahuel Molina. The La Candela FC players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Ecuador were winning 0-1.

The wind increased when Martin Palermo made the kick off in the second half. After some fancy dribbling in the 51st minute, Cristian Sancho managed to get in a good position for a shot. Ecuador's supporters rose to their feet, but Cristian Sancho was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Ruben Sánchez breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After a rather tough play, Ecuador's Camilo Gisbert got a free kick in the 55th minute. Martin Palermo sent away a hard shot on goal in the 56th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. La Candela FC's Rubén-Darío Feldmann got a good chance for a goal in the 67th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Cristian Sancho fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 70th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ruben Sánchez having to interfere. In the 74th minute, Rubén-Darío Feldmann ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Julio Vera was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-1. 77 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Martin Palermo came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. A collision led to Ecuador getting a freekick after 80 minutes play. Juan Sebastián Puig hit a great ball. If Martin Palermo had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 86th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The audience thought a goal was coming when Daniel Zorita got free with Ruben Sánchez in the 90th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Julio Vera made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Martin Palermo in the 91st minute of play. When the referee blew the final whistle, you could see the dissatisfaction in the Ecuador players' eyes. They were disappointed they hadn't taken more from the game.
