Julio Vera breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Daniel Zorita fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 10th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Fausto Weterio having to interfere. The goalkeeper smacked the ball away after a great corner, but Juan Sebastián Puig advanced and headed the ball into goal, 0-1 in the 13th minute. When Sixto Txartiko fell near the penalty area in the 16th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Estudiantes de la Plata's protests and gave Sixto Txartiko a yellow card for diving instead. In a very dangerous position, a player in Estudiantes de la Plata fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 15th minute. Penalty! The referee gave Ecuador a penalty, 17 minutes into the game. In the 30th minute Daniel Zorita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Fausto Weterio saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Fausto Weterio took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Daniel Zorita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Fulgencio Norino was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 37 minutes into the match. The supporters of Ecuador booed when Estudiantes de la Plata was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 38 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fulgencio Norino didn't get a good kick on the ball. Primitivo Andino missed a clear chance of a goal when in the 39 minute of the game fired away a shot, but unfortunally the ball went out to the Fausto Weterio right hand side. Fausto Weterio showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cristian Sancho, who was totally free with the ball in the 44th minute. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Tobias Feo to strike the kick off in the second half. Julio Vera made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Hernán-Adrián Crespo in the 55th minute of play. Cristian Sancho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 56th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Ecuador's Daniel Zorita got a good chance for a goal in the 57th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Cristian Sancho who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 59thth minute tested the skills of Fausto Weterio when he managed to save the team from getting behind. In the 61st minute, Cristian Sancho reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Fausto Weterio. The goal made the score 0-3. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 64th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 80 minutes into the game, Estudiantes de la Plata's Tobias Feo nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Julio Vera made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-4. Fausto Weterio made an important save on a dangerous shot by Cristian Sancho in the 89th minute. In the 90th minute of the match Ecuador got a corner. Estudiantes de la Plata's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Daniel Zorita ran over to the corner to take the kick. Daniel Zorita made a great header on Ecuador's corner, it was just that Estudiantes de la Plata's Fausto Weterio managed to reach the ball for a save. Cristian Sancho could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 95th minute of the match, but Fausto Weterio made a huge save. 97 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Tobias Feo came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Ecuador's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
