But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Patricio Costa couldn't finish the play. 21 minutes into the game, Venezuela's Tomas Illescas nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Andrea Pirlo made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. Tomas Illescas's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Andrea Pirlo read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 27th minute of play. In the 28th match minute, Venezuela was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Guillermo Mariano to maneuver through the defense. When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Tomas Illescas made a kick off. The referee showed Damazy Sroka the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Tomas Illescas fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 70th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Andrea Pirlo having to interfere. A collision led to Venezuela getting a freekick after 73 minutes play. Guillermo Mariano hit a great ball. In the 74th minute, Emil Rzeszutek got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Dawid Parajewski during the 79th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card.
