52 minutes into the game, Orlando Casaus was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Chile's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Modlau the free kick. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jarmo Laik in the 54th minute of play forced Chile's goalkeeper Thiago Pliego to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some careless play in the Modlau defense, Mariano Lacasa kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Lew Yashin. The Modlau fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Lew Yashin should have stopped the shot.
