Venezuela's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Mikael Ståhlberg was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-0. Simon Thidén struck a weak shot in the 16th minute. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Mikael Ståhlberg couldn't finish the play. Jonathan Ferrant made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Mikael Ståhlberg in the 21st minute of play. If Tomas Illescas had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 23rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 27th minute Tomas Illescas shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Tytus Wyrzykowski saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Mikael Ståhlberg blasted a shot towards the goal in the 35th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Jonathan Ferrant having to make a save. The audience was convinced that Tomas Illescas's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Tytus Wyrzykowski was relentless in the 38th minute of the game.
