With an extended leg and a bit of luck Julio Vera prevented the ball from getting in the gole. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 11th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Cristian Sancho fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 13th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Everardo Ado having to interfere. 21 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Diego Armando Lamb came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When Daniel Zorita came up free with the goalie in the 23rd minute, the Ecuador fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Daniel Zorita couldn't finish the play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Rafael Nadal in the 43rd minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Edmundo Cañass short, quick shot in the 47thth minute got Julio Vera to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The wind increased when Daniel Zorita made the kick off in the second half. Cristian Sancho's late challenge caught a Algarrobo's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Diego Armando Lamb in the 55th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Julio Vera saved Ecuador from getting behind. Cristian Sancho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 57th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Algarrobo made a substitution. Everardo Ado made a fantastic save in the 66th minute, when Daniel Zorita sent off a good shot on target. Daniel Zorita who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 71stth minute tested the skills of Everardo Ado when he managed to save the team from getting behind. When Luis Andino came up free with the goalie in the 73rd minute, the Ecuador fans jumped to their feet. In the 77th minute of the match Ecuador got a corner. Algarrobo's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Julio Vera was left in no man's land by his defense there! In the 92nd minute, Cristian Sancho got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Cristian Sancho recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 96th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal.
