After a defensive mix-up in Ecuador's zone, Coronel Paredes stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Julio Vera came out of the goal and Coronel Paredes tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

The wind increased when Coronel Paredes made the kick off in the second half. The audience thought a goal was coming when Daniel Zorita got free with Víctor Valdés in the 52nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In a very dangerous position, a player in Ecuador fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 54th minute. Penalty! The referee gave Calaflores FC. a penalty, 54 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Dionisio Zubizarreta, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Ecuador's Julio Vera. 1-0.
