The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Luis Andino hit a great freekick 2 minutes into the match. Jannes Van Leempoel showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Daniel Zorita, who was totally free with the ball in the 4th minute. After 17 minutes of play, Ecuador's Daniel Zorita made it 0-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Jannes Van Leempoel was left in no man's land by his defense there! If Cristian Sancho had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 23rd minute. In the 29th minute Daniel Zorita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jannes Van Leempoel saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 31st minute of the match Ecuador got a corner. Genk's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Jannes Van Leempoel didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Cristian Sancho went, in the 37th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-2 was the resulting score. In the 41st minute of the match, Vergil Rupov got a very nice opportunity to score, but Julio Vera was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. The Genk players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Ecuador were winning 0-2.

Genk's Michel Hakimi was substituted for Ariel Paris. Genk's Thomas-Jan Van de Weijer was substituted for Tony Mampaerts. The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Daniel Zorita stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Rain De Hond ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Julio Vera was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-2. Jannes Van Leempoel tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The audience was convinced that Vergil Rupov's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Julio Vera was relentless in the 62nd minute of the game. Ecuador's Cristian Sancho got a good chance for a goal in the 65th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The Genk fans' excitement grew in the 70th match minute when Genk's Vergil Rupov looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 2-2 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Genk's Albert Verdun was substituted for Alfons Rijniers. When Genk's Vergil Rupov in the 77th minute got a chance for a shot 77th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Ecuador's goalie prevented a goal. The supporters of Genk booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 81 match minutes in a wonderful position. Daniel Zorita didn't get a good kick on the ball. Cristian Sancho recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 84th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 86th minute Rain De Hond shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Julio Vera showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Alexander Klemensson in the 88th minute of the match. Jannes Van Leempoel made a fantastic save in the 94th minute, when Daniel Zorita sent off a good shot on target. Despite being the better team, Ecuador failed to find the winning goal and were forced to settle for a single point.
