Pedro Pelayo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Felix Montenegro in the 25th minute of play. Daniel Zorita received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 27th minute. Pedro Pelayo tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 28 minutes into the match, Flóki Cabezudo notched a goal, 2-0, to the right of Ecuador's Julio Vera. Julio Vera was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. The referee ignored Ecuador's protests and gave Camilo Gisbert a yellow card for diving instead. After 43 played minutes Ecuador got a freekick which was hit by Camilo Gisbert. If Flóki Cabezudo had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 46th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Af the end of the first half the score was 2-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

Stellenbosch made a substitution. Gerke Krupp replaced Laureano Gora. The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Flóki Cabezudo stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. A collision led to Ecuador getting a freekick after 53 minutes play. Juan Sebastián Puig hit a great ball. Daniel Zorita's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Pedro Pelayo read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 56th minute of play.
