The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-0.

Daniel Zorita could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 53rd minute of the match, but Dida Taffarel made a huge save. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by German Cano in the 55th minute of play. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Alfredo Martins in the 58th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Julio Vera saved Ecuador from getting behind. Nestor Paraibano struck a weak shot in the 60th minute. Julio Vera didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Marquês de Herval. With a little luck, Marquês de Herval's Dida Taffarel got control of the ball when Daniel Zorita tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 64th minute, Cristian Sancho ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Dida Taffarel was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-1.
