In the 17th minute of the match FC Hamburg got a corner. Gaita´s club's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Frank Groth ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led FC Hamburg's Frank Groth to fire away a dangerous shot which Jaime Cortez despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Jaime Cortez showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Pompiliu Roşculeţ in the 20th minute of the match. 20 minutes into the game, FC Hamburg's Pompiliu Roşculeţ nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Jaime Cortez made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. Hendrik Holletschek hit a great freekick 23 minutes into the match. FC Hamburg's Volker Harm proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 30th minute of the match, managed to save FC Hamburg from getting a goal against them. 31 minutes into the match, FC Hamburg's goal looked a bit too open when Kurtuluş Tuğcu came free, but Volker Harm reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Gaita´s club's Jaime Cortez played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Pompiliu Roşculeţ in the 35th minute of play. Volker Harm made an important save on a dangerous shot by Osvaldo Asteri in the 38th minute. The audience thought a goal was coming when Freddy Solustiano got free with Volker Harm in the 40th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After 41 played minutes FC Hamburg got a freekick which was hit by Laurențiu Cinteză. 45 minutes into the match, FC Hamburg's goal looked a bit too open when Kurtuluş Tuğcu came free, but Volker Harm reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Frank Groth kicked well hit freekick during the 45th minute of the match. The long shot by Freddy Solustiano in the 46th minute really tested Volker Harm's skills. The ball was on its way into the goal to the left of him when he managed to stretch himself and save the shot and avoid a goal. Thoralf Blohm fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 47th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jaime Cortez having to interfere.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Pompiliu Roşculeţ to make the kick off. The audience thought a goal was coming when Thoralf Blohm got free with Jaime Cortez in the 53rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Gaita´s club's Jaime Cortez played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Pompiliu Roşculeţ in the 59th minute of play. Jaime Cortez took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Thoralf Blohm, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 63rd minute, Kurtuluş Tuğcu left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Gaita´s club fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-1. Pompiliu Roşculeţ sent away a hard shot on goal in the 69th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. FC Hamburg's Ilkay Gündoğan was substituted for Eduard Hilpert. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Kurtuluş Tuğcu in the 73rd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Volker Harm prevented the ball from getting in the gole. With an all-out effort, FC Hamburg's Jaime Cortez threw himself towards the right post 76 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Pompiliu Roşculeţ, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Jaime Cortez made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Pompiliu Roşculeţ in the 86th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Delmiro Xabel in the 89th minute of play forced FC Hamburg's goalkeeper Volker Harm to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Kurtuluş Tuğcu struck a weak shot in the 90th minute. Volker Harm didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Gaita´s club. FC Hamburg made a substitution. Batur Mahçup replaced Rainer Bethge. Pompiliu Roşculeţ sent away a hard shot on goal in the 93rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance.
