The audience thought a goal was coming when Fu Sheng Jian got free with Jonathan Ferrant in the 20th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After having played for 23 minutes, Tomas Illescas managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Venezuela's supporters crossed their fingers, but Tomas Illescas was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Team in construction's Cristo Lorenz played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Tomas Illescas in the 24th minute of play. Cristo Lorenz stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Tomas Illescas's shot from short distance in the 42nd minute. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Fu Sheng Jian to make the kick off.
