If Tomas Berganza had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 3rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. With a little luck, Panama's Marcos Cotilla got control of the ball when Nunez Gizon tried to sneak it across the goal line. When Dylan Sarmiento fell near the penalty area in the 16th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Panama's protests and gave Dylan Sarmiento a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to Panama getting a freekick after 17 minutes play. Dylan Sarmiento hit a great ball. Marcos Cotilla showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Nunez Gizon, who was totally free with the ball in the 18th minute. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

Isidoro Sarmiento might have been able to make a better finish in the 94th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Guaberto Cucao. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Isidoro Sarmiento ran back to his position shaking his head. Guaberto Cucao took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tomas Berganza, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The final whistle blew with the score still tied, and both teams left the pitch thinking about the missed chances that could have given their team the win.
