Matos Velhos's Vito de Godoi played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bernardo lago in the 13th minute of play. In the 14th minute Karl Nietlisbach shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Edwin van der Sar saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Edwin van der Sar showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Generoso Silvino, who was totally free with the ball in the 15th minute. After some careless play in the União Sport Clube Paredes defense, Jiang Qing Lin kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Edwin van der Sar. The União Sport Clube Paredes fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Edwin van der Sar should have stopped the shot. In the 22nd minute, Sabino Vilhena hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Vito de Godoi took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jerónimo Furtado, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Edwin van der Sar showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Júlio Gentil in the 33rd minute of the match. A collision led to União Sport Clube Paredes getting a freekick after 33 minutes play. Piara Bue hit a great ball. 0-2 became the score in the 35th minute when Júlio Gentil elegantly shot the ball into goal just under the crossbar. After a defensive mix-up in Matos Velhos's zone, Bernardo lago stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Vito de Godoi came out of the goal and Bernardo lago tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 40 minutes into the match, Jerónimo Furtado had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Vito de Godoi. Matos Velhos's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Jerónimo Furtado was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-2. In the 41st minute, Júlio Gentil hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. If Bernardo lago had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 43rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Tord Böcklund hit a great freekick 45 minutes into the match. Vito de Godoi made an important save on a dangerous shot by Alexandre Santana in the 45th minute. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Júlio Gentil stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. An unexpectedly hard shot by Bernardo lago in the 57th minute of play forced Matos Velhos's goalkeeper Vito de Godoi to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 60 minutes into the match, Matos Velhos's goal looked a bit too open when Bernardo lago came free, but Vito de Godoi reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Karl Nietlisbach might have been able to make a better finish in the 65th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Edwin van der Sar. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Karl Nietlisbach ran back to his position shaking his head. Karl Nietlisbach's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Edwin van der Sar read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 65th minute of play. Vito de Godoi stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Bernardo lago's shot from short distance in the 68th minute. The União Sport Clube Paredes fans' excitement grew in the 68th match minute when União Sport Clube Paredes's Bernardo lago looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 2-2 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Matos Velhos made a substitution. With 93 minutes on the clock, Durval Meira commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card. Durval Meira hit a great freekick 94 minutes into the match. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Matos Velhos had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
