Karol Kopacz was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Alexander Carballo during the 20th minute. After 32 played minutes Costa Rica got a freekick which was hit by Eliseo Noboa. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Aleksander Bykowski in the 34th managed to get into a good position. The referee ignored Gortaty's protests and gave Wiktor Pionek a yellow card for diving instead. After 37 played minutes Gortaty got a freekick which was hit by Wiktor Pionek. Eliseo Noboa received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 41st minute. Karol Kopacz tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Eliseo Noboa sent away a hard shot on goal in the 42nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Costa Rica were furious when Juan Rubio was red carded, 45 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests. After the first half Costa Rica were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Benito Sanz came out of the goal and Franciszek Wicherek tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Benito Sanz was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Benito Sanz didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Aleksander Bykowski went, in the 86th minute, to the upper right corner, 5-2 was the resulting score. 90 minutes into the game, Franciszek Wicherek cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 6-2. Benito Sanz was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. If Lautaro Puig had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 95th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. There was no doubt that Gortaty were the better team. Gortaty's players enjoyed the ovations of the crowd after the victory.
