A collision led to FC Lugano getting a freekick after 12 minutes play. Fréderic Huerlimann hit a great ball. Fluminense DF were awarded a corner in the 14th minute after FC Lugano's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Dudu Aguiar took the corner. Fluminense DF's Dudu Aguiar was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Dieter Gärtner in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Augusto Neves got in the 14th a clear chance and fired away a hard shot against goal, but Dieter Gärtner handled the situation perfectly and made a save by the crossbar. In the 16th minute Wesley Torres shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dieter Gärtner saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 17th minute, Guido Emennegger hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 17th match minute, FC Lugano was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Chatmongkon Borvornpattarakomol to maneuver through the defense. Dieter Gärtner didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Wesley Torres went, in the 20th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-2 was the resulting score. Dieter Gärtner showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Augusto Neves, who was totally free with the ball in the 36th minute. 37 minutes into the match, FC Lugano's goal looked a bit too open when Augusto Neves came free, but Dieter Gärtner reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 43rd minute of the match, Odysseus De Souza got a very nice opportunity to score, but Walmyr Alagoano was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. After the first half Fluminense DF were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Fluminense DF's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave FC Lugano the free kick. Fausto Amaral kicked well hit freekick during the 65th minute of the match. FC Lugano's Ulric Donsante was substituted for Odysseus De Souza. The supporters of FC Lugano booed when Fluminense DF was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 66 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fausto Amaral didn't get a good kick on the ball. Ulric Donsante received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 67th minute. Walmyr Alagoano tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. With a little luck, FC Lugano's Dieter Gärtner got control of the ball when Wesley Torres tried to sneak it across the goal line. Wesley Torres kicked well hit freekick during the 79th minute of the match. 81 minutes into the match, FC Lugano's goal looked a bit too open when Augusto Neves came free, but Dieter Gärtner reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ulric Donsante in the 86th minute of play forced Fluminense DF's goalkeeper Walmyr Alagoano to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Augusto Neves came up free with the goalie in the 91st minute, the Fluminense DF fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Augusto Neves couldn't finish the play. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Tito Waechter during the 93rd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 93 played minutes FC Lugano got a freekick which was hit by Tito Waechter. 94 minutes into the match, Guto Vinhas had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Dieter Gärtner. FC Lugano's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Guto Vinhas was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-3.

The Fluminense DF supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Fluminense DF would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
